CONTEXTUALIZATION IN PROGRAM DESIGN: SERVING THE BIPOC COMMUNITIES AMIDST SYSTEMIC BARRIERS

Image of diversity and unity

Contextualization in program design is crucial for effectively addressing the unique needs of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) communities. Deep-rooted systemic barriers originating from colonial structures have perpetuated disparities in social service access and efficacy for BIPOC populations. Contemporary “one-size-fits-all” approaches further exacerbate these disparities. To genuinely serve and understand the BIPOC communities, not-for-profit organizations must prioritize community engagement, cultural competence, historical awareness, and adaptive design in their program strategies. #BIPOCInclusionMatters

Yet, the historical basis of established institutions results in irrefutable systemic and systematic barriers for Canadian people of colour.” (Williams, M.T., Khanna Roy, A., MacIntyre, MP. et al.)
